7 must know tips to save massive money on your AC Bill this summer
Newsflash, this summer is going to be hot in Florida, Texas, and anywhere else in the sunbelt. Yeah yeah, that might not be breaking news, but just because it’s hot doesn’t mean you need to watch your power bill suffer to enjoy cold temperatures inside.
What are the tips?
Well, the power company isn’t going to like us telling you this, and most native Floridians know the tricks… it’s not just heat that will kill you, it’s humidity.
BONUS TIP submitted by a Zephyrhills Real Estate broker, Sam Turgeon:
Insulation in the attic is a big factor. It makes a huge difference.

But if you can’t afford that job?
1. Turn on your ceiling fan.
If you have a ceiling fan, you’re in luck… running them makes a room feel 10 degrees cooler and cost pennies on the dollar compared to running a pricey air conditioner:
Replacing your AC with ceiling fan could save you up to $215 and 1.35 tons of CO2 annually.
If you don’t have one in each room, you’ll need to look into buying one, but it’s totally worth it.
2. Seal your ducts
If your house isn’t brand new, you’ve got wear and tear. Each year that hot sun beats on the siding and house materials, causing openings to form. Yankees will know about how their roads turn to deadly pothole ridden areas due to the same process.
So spend $50 to seal every duct to keep cold air in and hot air OUT.

3. Weather strip your windows
Like above, weather stripping those windows keeps the hot air out, and keeps the cold air in, saving the time the AC is on.
4. Use nature to help you keep the house cold.
At night, during the dog days of summer, it’s about 72 degrees. That’s probably colder than you should have the house at (see the next tip for explanation.) So put in a box fan into your window at night while you sleep. The cool air will come in and running a box fan is pennies a day in electric costs. Then your house will stay cool all night. Tip: don’t keep your windows open during the day!
5. Black out shades on all windows
Throw out that pricey window tint. Black Out shades, or even an old quilt, if you’re really broke, can keep the sun from beating down on your windows directly into your house. The window tint simply does not have the same power, is a pain in the butt to install, and it’s kinda ugly.
6. 78 degrees is a must
Keeping your AC at 72 degrees is worthless, and a massive waste of money. Don’t believe me? Ask the scientists and economists.
Energy.gov :
-
Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling bill will be.
-
Keep your house warmer than normal when you are away, and lower the thermostat setting to 78°F (26°C) only when you are at home and need cooling. A programmable thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature.
7 Time your AC
Keep the AC set at around 83 degrees during the day at work, and lower it to 78 when you get home. According to all the researchers, an AC is most efficient when running for a while, not in short bursts as it would if it were running all day when you’re not home. So setting it high when gone and lower when you get back will cause the AC to work less hard.
That’s it.
